Beating the Heat

Last week, we were hit with a major heatwave that still hasn't left...  When we checked the weekend temperatures, they were all over 100 degrees, and that sounded horrible!  So, we headed to Mommom & Pop's lake house in NY to escape the heat - highs only in the mid/upper 80's!  We left Friday afternoon...

Saturday morning, we convinced Pop to pull the kids on their raft behind his bass boat.  He went pretty slow, which meant that the kids were braver than they are on our boat where it's faster.  Lucas was riding with no hands and trying to pull the raft from side to side and up and down.  Lottie was all giggles, and Mommom was all nervous!
After rafting, we swam a while at the neighbor's house on the water, then hung out on the porch.  Tony went for a mountain bike ride that ended in a flat tire and a 4 mile walk out of the woods.
After the kids took a monster nap, we went go kart riding.  Lottie got to go this year.  As soon as we told her we were going to NY, she exclaimed "And I can go kart ride cause I'm 3 now!"  Lottie rode with Pop and Lucas went with Tony.  Then we had dinner and the kids romped around in the yard like a bunch of maniacs...
Sunday morning, we hiked the Gorge trail...  I could do that every day!  It wasn't too hot and both kids walked the WHOLE thing on their own.  Nobody had to pick Lottie up even for a second!
Then, the kids took naps...  Mommom and I went to a local shop, and then we swam some more and had dinner...
After baths, it was time for ice cream and more go karting.  Charlotte made a holy mess eating her ice  cream.  And unfortunately, Lucas intentionally broke the toy plane I got him at the local shop, so he had to just watch  the go karting...  But he didn't have a fit!  Lottie rode with Daddy and Pop got to ride alone...
Back at home, there was more yard play and some lacrosse...
We left mid-morning Monday to head back to the hottest place on Earth...  But not before stocking up on fireworks in PA along the way :)

  1. Looking at these pictures I just realized: we've been to that Gorge trail! (Finger Lakes, right?) Beautiful place, and it sounds like the kids will be hiking the AT in no time. Glad you got to escape the heat (and the power outages)!
