Raystown Lake

On Sunday, 7/24, we headed north to Raystown Lake, PA with Jeff, Chasity, Lily, & Nathan. We went last year for the first time with Tony's sis and her family. This time, we didn't take the boat. We wanted to see what a vacation would be like without it, not to mention trailering it over the mountains is brutal. We took a different route this time... on scenic back roads thru farmlands and directly thru Gettysburg. The drive up was uneventful :) Always good. When we got there we set up camp, did a little playing/swimming, and headed out for a Wal-Mart shopping spree. The kids were sooo excited that they were like little animals running around in there!
Monday morning, it began to rain so we headed to the visitor center to scout out brochures of possible "other activities" we could take part in during the rain. We decided to go to Lincoln Caverns to explore the caves. While waiting for our tour to begin, the kids checked out the marbles, rocks, and animal toys...
Some shots underground...
And back outside... the 4 cousins at the site of the sinkhole where the caves were originally discovered.
After a Chinese food buffet (how's that for camping food?) & a much needed trip to the beer warehouse, we headed back to camp. Did some more swimming and hanging out, and took an evening walk...
Tuesday morning, we began with breakfast! Yummy!!! Look how happy the kids were...
Then, to the lake for more swimming... So nice - we had a little trail in the woods that went right to the lake! We took our boat rafts and just tied them up in the water...
Since my camera is technically waterproof up to 10 feet, I ventured out in the water with it. Since we all wore lifevests (to make swimming more relaxing/easy while carrying and handling the children), it was easy to swim out there and keep myself afloat with it!

Some nearby campers let us use their kayaks when we wanted...
After rolling around playing in the tent, check out this bedhead:
Marshmallows/smores at night :)
Not having the boat to force the kids into mid-day naps sure left them tired at night...
Just a warning - there are many sleeping kids pics coming! Just LOVE them when they're asleep... so quiet and still :)

Wednesday morning we hung around camp a bit... a little fishing and playing...
I would like to selfishly point out that I was the only one (out of me, Lucas, & Lily) to catch a fish. You have to look really closely to see ;P
Then we went to the local marina. They have HUGE carp fish that you can feed dogfood to!
Next, we headed back to the caves, but not to go underground. They have a sluice, where the kids can pan for jewels. You buy the bag of dirt with jewels in it from inside the giftshop. I was entirely too amused by this activity. Tony did it as a kid, but I'd never heard of it. We even got extra dirt to bring home to pan later!
Another much needed run to the beer store. I love Nathan's pink sippy cup on top...
Next up was some lunch... Look how beat Lucas was:
'Then, to the playground, which was literally right across from our campsite. The kids spent a lot of time there, but I didn't always take the camera. Only so many pics of them swinging/sliding that I can take...
The dads were beat too. Jeff went to his tent to nap, while Tony decided to nap at the park!
After dinner, there was ice cream! Charlotte thoroughly enjoyed mooching off of everyone's...
After a long evening walk, the kids were ready for bed!

Thursday morning, more rain was coming. Boy was it nice to have Jeff's phone that would give us a radar picture! So, we headed to a nearby town and found a playground... There, it just rained a little on us...
After hitting up the Pizza Hut buffet, it was back to camp for us. More relaxing, playing, and rides in the bike trailer...
The evening brought more rain, which meant we got to bed at a decent hour after some tent play!
Friday morning, there was a lot of fog on the lake...
Swimming up next
Sorry the camera didn't make it down to the lake every day...

We escaped another storm by going to the visitor's center again. Lottie loved to pet the fox and snake, but was horrified by the bear...
After the rain, there was more playground...
Lottie was in love with her new bear she got in the visitor's center. She searched it out every time we went in... And it was the first toy she's ever picked out/asked for herself, so we had to get it!
Glow stick fun was up next... Thank goodness no one was ever sprayed by the skunks that came out each night and weren't the least bit scared to wander onto your campsite full of fire and loud kids!

Saturday was our last full day there, and luckily it was gorgeous! A little playground-ing to start the day off right...
For the 1st swim of the day, we walked to the other side of the camp loop to the other side of the peninsula - where last year's campsite was... just to swim somewhere else for a change.
After a while there, we went back to our own camp spot for more water fun. Somewhere maybe 2 days ago, Char learned to swim by herself (with lifevest of course!!!). This was unexpected... With as much as we're around water, we've been amazed that she's not more into swimming. She likes playing on the beach, getting her legs wet, but has no interest in going all in. She's always been quite content just playing on the boat when we're out. Which is all good, except Mommy gets HOT sitting out there watching her. I WANT TO SWIM!!! So, all summer, we've been forcing her into the water while I hold her. She whines and begs to get back on the boat. Little by little, we've extended the time that we made her stay in... This trip she learned to swim "all by self" as she would say. I let go of her, which usually causes a major freak out, and told her to kick her legs. That made her stay upright instead of tipping over. She was so excited! So she does "kicks and scoops"... Kicks her legs and makes "ice cream scoops" out of her hands to paddle. She was swimming back and forth between me and Tony, and even spun around in lots of circles! Yay Lottie!!!
Lots of swimming=tired babies!
Some shots of our last night...
Waking up before packing up and heading home...
We were on the road by 9:30 and home by 1. What a nice, relaxing trip. Glad Jeff and company came along and hope they'll do it again with us!

Had to unpack and re-pack, as me and the kids headed to NY the next morning... Stay tuned for that post!
